Primary Debating Competition Success!!!!

As mentioned in our previous newsletter our Yr 6 debators reached the final of the Enfield Primary Debating competition which took place in the Enfield Council Chambers. They were given 2 motions to prepare in advance of the competition but, as they didn’t know whether they would be debating for or against the motion, they essentially had to prepare four debates!

On the day, Sofia, Harsh, Zahir and Pooja were all rather nervous but also eager to show what they could do. After drawing straws to find out which motion they would be debating, they were pleased to find it was one of their favourite choices.
Finally, their turn arrived Merryhills vs St Andrews – the motion – ‘this house would leave London during the London 2012 Olympic games’.

Harsh spoke first and set out the team’s arguments very clearly. When Zahir spoke, he not only added reasons to leave but also explained why the opposition arguments were wrong. The final speaker of the debate was Pooja. Her job was especially difficult – to summarise the whole debate including her own teams’ points of view, what the opposition had said and points from the floor. She was amazing! After a few minute’s deliberation from the judges, they announced who was in the final. We held our breath… then let it out in a great cheer as we found out —MERRYHILLS!!!!

For the final, the team had only 30 minutes to prepare a debate and Miss Clifford wasn’t allowed to help them! Working from only their own knowledge and a single prompt sheet, they organised their ideas between themDuring the debate, all 3 debaters were amazing, as was Sofia who added ideas during the floor debate to help her team mates. They all spoke clearly, persuasively and when it was announced that Merryhills had won the whole tournament and were the best of 18 schools we were all amazed and hugely proud.
The team will now be representing Enfield at the All London Finals !
A fantastic achievement well done to our great debators.

Cross Country February 2012

On a bitterly cold Saturday morning our cross country team competed in the Enfield Primary Schools Cross Country event at Trent Park. The course was 1.5 miles long with 117 girls and 128 boys from 25 schools taking part.

Merryhills pupils ran a great race – the girls results were: Meghan 2nd, Alison 58th, Jolie 76th, Chloe 77th, Zara 79th. The boys results were: William 18th, Joe 38th, Lucas 50th and Alexander 57th, Costa fell so was unable to finish.
Overall position put Merryhills boys in 9th place with 106 points and girls in 13th place with 137 points. Well done to all our fantastic runners who have been given Olympic value awards by Mr Wheeler for determination and courage.

PREVIOUS CROSS COUNTRY SUCCESS!!
On 16 November, our Cross Country Team took part in the annual event at Hadley Wood School.
We did exceptionally well with Meghan and Alison (Chestnut) taking 1st and 2nd second place respectively in the girls race. In the boys race Lucas (Oak) finished 2nd with Costa (Elm) 3rd.
The rest of the team ran really well and from their efforts ensured the boys came 1st in their category and the girls came 2nd
The team score overall confirmed that Merryhills were RUNNERS UP in the competition!!!.
Well done to our fantastic runners you have done Merryhills proud!!!

Cricket Finals @ The Hub

After our win at the ‘Best Team Cricket’ tournament at Enfield C.C we were entered into the Middlesex Finals at The Hub, Regents Park.
We arrived in glorius sunshine and played some very strong teams. We actually won 3 out of 4 games and tied with two other schools. The numbers of runs were counted to deterine who would go through to the semi finals. Unfortunately we had not scored enough runs and sadly had to watch the other teams go through.
HOWEVER, everyone agreed that we had had a great time and felt very proud of the fact that we had reached the county finals and had the opportunity to play at The Hub.
Well Done Cameron, Campbell, Charles, Lorenzo, Vincent, Kishan, Akshay and Kush you are a credit to Merryhills School !

Merryhills Cricketers visit Lords!!

As part of the Chance to Shine project that has been brought into schools across the borough, Merryhills were invited to take part in a Kwik Cricket tournament, to be played at the ‘home of cricket’ – Lords.

On Friday 10th June 10 of the Year 6 cricket team along with Mrs Richards (SEN Specialist/Chance to Shine coach) and Miss Davies (Year 2 Teacher) travelled to Lords on the tube. There we were met by Beth Morgan, who is part of the ladies England cricket team, and Richard Darwin, Manager of Chance to Shine. We were 1 of 6 schools representing from the North London area.

We were allowed to have a walk around the main ground where we had pictures taken and were allowed to touch the grass in the hope it would bring us good luck!
Our matches were to be played on the nursery ground, we were lucky enough to be able to play 1 whole game.

Unfortunately rain stopped play and we had to make a hasty retreat indoors. All was not lost as we were able to continue with a slightly modified version of kwik in the indoor nets.

When all the scores were calculated Merryhills and Fulham were to play in the finals. Fulham batted 1st and despite a very good team effort we came runners up.

However, we never lost our Merryhills magic, everyone agreed it was a very magical day all-round, after all it’s not everyday you get the chance to shine and play cricket at Lords!!

Well done to our cricket stars Francesca, Kishan, Emily, Lorenzo, Akshay, Cameron, Lilly, Kush, Vincent and Belle and a big thank you to Mrs Richards and Miss Davies.
